My name is Travis ComesLast. I am Assiniboine, Ogalala, and Hunkpapa. I have been incarcerated in prison for the past 28 years for murder and robbery I committed in 1996 at age 20 while serving a juvenile sentence. While in prison I have taken advantage of participating in many programs and education opportunities available to me. I am not the same person I was when I entered prison, I have put my heart into changing the behaviors that led me to prison. I have done my best to transform my life and atone for my actions. I accept complete responsibility and fault for the pain and loss I have caused to all affected by my poor decisions, and I am deeply remorseful for my actions and not a day goes by that I dont wish I could take it all back and change what I have done!
For the past 2 decades I have used the skills and experience learned through my transformation to assist other individuals to find change, that not only is beneficial to each individual but has also enhanced safety to communities. I have counseled hundreds of people in prison encouraging them to better themselves. I have decades of experience working with individuals in gangs, addiction, and dealing with traumas many of us have experienced. I am blessed to have heard from so many who have thanked me and attribute my influence upon them to successful reentry. I do not do it because I seek any gain, I do it because it is who I am, and I truly want to help others. I have completed, participated in, or am currently engaged in more than fifty different programs and opportunities that include educational, vocational, treatment, self help, community service, employment, and volunteer work.
In my spare time I continue to enhance and expand my learning, skills, and knowledge. I am in an award-winning documentary Minor Differences. I lead sweat lodge ceremonies, drum and sing, dance, bead and make regalia. I have advocated for reform and my passion upon release is to work with at risk youth and young adults. My aim is to assist in the healing of traumas and help the next generation in breaking the cycle of incarceration.
